Even though this has been a difficult year for young sportsmen of the Kalahari, there has also been a silver lining for a young hockey player of Kuruman.

Mothusimang Mochwiri, the captain of the Kalahari High School’s first hockey team, says for every yin there is a yang.

“Due to this virus one had to restructure everything in life. But it has also tought me how to master self-discipline so that I can make my dream a reality.”

He says one of the things he was looking forward to this year, was finally completing his long-term goal of not just becoming a captain, but also a good leader for the Kalahari boys’ hockey team.

With his sporting career being on hold this centre link, left link and left back player, through self-discipline, is working hard to improve his marks, and staying healthy so that he can pursue his dream of playing on a national level.

The first step towards this is by studying at the North-West University next year and getting into the Pukke hockey team.

He says it has always been a dream for him to represent South Africa on the hockey field. “It’s only when I’m on that field that I feel like I’m a part of something bigger than myself, it’s only when I’m with exceptional individuals on my team that I strive to become a better version of myself.”

One of his proudest moments was becoming the captain for his team. “It just goes to show how much trust, respect and love the hockey team and the coach has in me.”
