Robin-Lee Eland was announced as Athletics Griqualand West’s (AGW) Athlete of the Year.
This 15-year-old learner of the Hopetown High School was awarded this accolade at the federation’s awards ceremony held on 11 November, where its athletes were awarded for delivering excellent performances during 2022 in cross-country, track and field items, as well as road-running.
At the event, the Teemaneng Running Club was announced as the Club of the Year.
The Kimberley Road Runners was the other nominee in this category.
Robin-Lee, a South African champion, represented the AGW at Athletics South Africa’s (ASA) Track and Field U16 and Youth Championships.
Here he earned a gold medal in the 200 m event for boys U16, and a silver medal in the 100 m event for boys U16.
He is coached by Maryna van der Walt, who has been lauded for Robin-Lee’s athletic achievements.
Anton Ndungu, a learner at the Bongani Primary School in Douglas, was the other nominee in the Athlete of the Year category.
Anton represented AGW at the ASA Cross-Country Championships; and earned a gold medal in the 2 km item for boys U10.
The winners in the road-running categories are:
- best improved female road-runner overall: Limakatso Selala;
- best improved male road-runner overall: Sydney Stevens;
- best overall female road-running athlete: Maricelle Kruger; and
- best overall male road-running athlete: Shadrack Selaledi.
The winners in the track and field categories are:
- best track youth athlete, male: Robin-Lee Eland; and
- best field junior athlete, male: Ruan le Roux
The winners in the cross-country categories are:
- best male cross-country New-comer of the Year: Anton Ndungu;
- best male cross-country primary school athlete: Anton Ndungu; and
- best cross-country senior male athlete: Shadrack Selaledi.
Recipients of the AGW Certificates for their ASA National Championship Top 25% Finish achievements are: Wilco Williams, Shadrack Selaledi, Julius Arries, Kennedy Jacobs, Jaden van Rooyen, Anton Ndungu, Lenshwin Mfengu, and Randall Kat.
