The brutal rape of a 60-year-old woman has left the Bothaville community reeling in shock.

The woman was severly injured when her assailant struck her three times on her head with a hammer before he raped her.

Sgt. Palesa Thabana, police spokesperson, says it is alleged that on Saturday, 26 July, at about 12:15 the Bothaville police were summoned to a complaint of rape.

“On arrival, they found a 60-year-old woman bleeding profusely. It is alleged the victim had just entered her house when she was accosted by an unknown African male. The victim sustained severe injuries to the head and was taken to a local hospital, but was subsequently transferred to Welkom due to the severity of her injuries,” says Thabana.

The police have confiscated the hammer that is suspected to have been used in the crime.

The Welkom Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit is investigating a case of rape.

Thabana says the police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact WO Anje Tait of the Welkom FCS unit on 083 279 3213 or the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111. Alternatively, an anonymous tip-off can be sent through the MySAPS App.
