A woman appeared in the Kuruman District Court this week where she faces charges of murder and fraud after her child died under suspicious circumstances at the Kuruman Hospital.

The charges against the accused, Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho, emanate from an incident where she had insured her child for a large amount of money and, after the suspicious death of the child, made an insurance claim, stated Mojalefa Senokoatsane, regional spokesperson of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Northern Cape division.

Originally from the North West, the accused, who is currently in custody, was denied bail by the Mmabatho District Court on 19 January, where she is also facing murder and insurance fraud charges.

She was arrested in November 2023 after investigations led by the police uncovered similar incidences where her family members, whom she had insured, died under mysterious circumstances.

The accused is remanded in custody until her next appearance on 12 March in the Kuruman Magistrates’ Court for further investigation and the appointment of attorney representation.
