In this year’s Absa Wildeklawer Schools Sports Tournament in Kimberley, soccer will be a new addition.

An estimated 4 239 participants from 85 primary and high schools all over the country will compete in rugby, netball and soccer.

It will be the first time that football fans will be cheered up since the tournament began in 2009. The Motsepe Foundation, widely knowns for its interest in sports, will be involved by sponsoring four soccer development teams for the soccer tournament. Peter Ledwaba, the head of Sports, Music and Arts at the foundation, says an objective is to develop youth football at school level.

The primary school’s netball and rugby matches were played from Sunday (24/04) until Wednesday (27/04). The outline for the rest of the tournament is as follows:

  • 27 to 30 April: rugby and netball (invitational tournament) at the Diamantveld High School and at Newton;
  • 29 April to 2 May: rugby (junior) at Diamantveld and Newton;
  • 29 April to 2 May: rugby and netball (senior) at Diamantveld; and
  • 29 April to 2 May: soccer at the Kimberley Boys’ High School.

Admission per day for the Absa Wildeklawer Sport Tournament is R50 for adults and R20 for children. Children in school clothes will be admitted for free.

Limited parking is available at Diamantveld and Kimberley Boys’ High at R50 per vehicle.
