The street behind Kimberley’s main tourist attraction, the Big Hole, was recently cleaned as part of the Clean World Movement.

New Main Street which is used as a taxi rank, was cleaned in May by members of the global welfare organisation, the WeLoveU Foundation, to commemorate World Environment Day which is celebrated on Sunday (05/06).

This street, with no toilet facilities and no dust bins in sight, was polluted with dumped garbage.

Six volunteers collected various kinds of garbage and filth such as toilet paper, cigarette butts, bottles and plastic bags. Within two hours only 35 garbage bags were filled.

“The hope is that more people get involved with the foundation, and participate in various activities to keep the city clean and safe for residents to be proud of their city,” says Starlin Martin of the foundation.

An official of the international WeLoveU Foundation explained with a clean environment as basis, one can lead a healthy and happy life. This movement cleans cities, parks, mountains, seas and rivers around the world with more than 30 countries participating.

WeLoveU is active in various parts of the world and are conducting more than 3 400 diverse volunteer services, including environmental protection, blood donation, emergency relief, poverty and hunger alleviation, water and sanitation, and educational support.

Martin says Heart to Heart youth volunteers presented health-care workers at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley with cheer-up messages and snack-packs early in May.

“This was to show our appreciation for their tireless efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Marlin says.

These young adult groups are carrying out a variety of activities for sustainable development of mankind and the earth, such as educational support, well-being promotion, emergency relief, cultural exchange, climate change responses, reduced plastic use, and terrestrial and marine ecosystem protection.
