The mother and son duo Annelie and CP Mathewson were once again crowned champions of the Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Mixed Pairs play-offs.
During a cold and rainy day in Kimberley on Sunday, 2 June, the Mathewsons of the Beaconsfield Park Bowling Green Club defeated Jan Erasmus and Caren van der Westhuizen from Sishen in a closely contested final.
The scores were still level after 19 ends, but the experience of the Mathewsons showed as they managed to score on both the last two ends to secure victory.
They will represent the NCB at the Bowls South Africa Mixed Pairs competition.
Wilhelm Malan and Charmaine Loock, also from Sishen, ended in third place, with Marietjie van den Berg and André Laubsher from Upington placing fourth.
Braam van der Westhuizen, president of the NCB, congratulated everyone involved for an excellent event. He also thanked the spectators who braved the cold weather to support the sport.
“Good bowls were played throughout the weekend, which made me proud. The final event was a cliffhanging match.”
Van der Westhuizen said the performance of the Northern Cape players on national level ws outstanding.
The prestige veteran and junior master’s event is taking place this weekend in Kimberley.
