The men’s rugby team of the North West University in Potchefstroom won the first University Sports South Africa (USSA) Rugby Sevens Championship to be held at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley.
The women’s rugby team of the University of Stellenbosch were the victors in their category.
This was announced after the USSA men’s and women’s rugby championship that took place on Friday (23/09) and Saturday at the SPU Sports Campus Fields and Windhoek Draught Park.
More than 760 players and officials involved in university rugby gathered in the Northern Cape capital for this event.
A team comprised of the Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association (Botessa) also took part.
In a match on Saturday between the women’s teams of the SPU and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) it became apparent that the SPU team will have to strategise better for future tournaments.
The team’s energy was not enough to secure them a victory.
In this match, UWC secured a victory over SPU, defeating their opposition by 36 – 0.
