The male sevens rugby team of the University of Pretoria (UP), and the female sevens team of the North West University (NWU) have emerged victorious after the weekend’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) sevens rugby tournament held in Kimberley.

It was the third consecutive year the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) hosted the tournament on its sport precinct, which includes the Suzuki Stadium.

Male and female teams of universities across the country participated in high-intensity rugby matches from Friday, 20 September, to Sunday, 22 September.

In their final match against the Exercise Teachers Academy (ETA) College, the SPU’s male team had a 5 – 7 loss, while the SPU female team secured a 10 – 0 win in their final match against Rhodes University.

This tournament follows shortly after the SPU’s first rugby team secured their place for the first time in the 2025 Varsity Shield. On this ocassion, Prof. Andrew Crouch, SPU’s vice-chancellor and principal, said sports play a vital role in development and unites communities, describing this victory as a proud moment for the university, and the Northern Cape.
