World Television Day, celebrated on Monday (21/11), is a celebration of the device, but also of the philosophy which it represents.
Television represents a symbol for communication and globalisation in the contemporary world, according to the United Nations (UN), who stated that this device continues to be the single largest source of video consumption.
The UN also stated that television has an increasing impact on decision-making, by bringing world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security.
It also has a potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, including economic and social issues.
In South Africa, television was introduced in 1976.
