The Northern Cape Bowls U30 masters title was presented to Kieran Kelly (17) after a championship in which the 12 top U30 players from the province took part.
The event on Saturday (19/02) took place at the second oldest bowls club in the country, the Kimberley Town Bowling Club.
The club was established in 1891 and the young bowlers, some as young as 16, added their name to the rich history of the venue.
The field was made up of men and women from all over the province, with players from as far as Upington taking part.
After five rounds Kieran, of the Beaconsfield Park Bowling Club, was crowned the new champion. He eliminated the defending champion and current Northern Cape Singles champion, Driaan van Niekerk, in the semifinal rounds, and he beat Le Roux Fourie of the Upington Bowls Club in a final with 21 – 16.
Kieran now adds the title of U30 master to his record, which includes winning gold in the Bowls South Africa U15 National Junior Tournament. He hopes to repeat this in the U20 national championship in Bloemfontein at the end of March.
Northern Cape Bowls also recently hosted its 2022 singles championship, in which the 16 top men’s and women’s players from all four districts competed in Kimberley.
In this championship mother and son René and Driaan van Niekerk respectively won the women’s and men’s titles, adding this to their sub-district titles.
The runners-up in the women’s section are Annelie Matthewson (second, Beaconsfield) and Adri Koekemoer (third, Beaconsfield).
