A bridge building team of the Kimberley Technical High School (THS) is the winner of this year’s regional bridge building competition presented by the South African Council for Civil Engineers (Saice).
Their bridge was able to hold a weight of 218,2 kg.
The bridge building event was hosted on 18 May in the Diamond Pavilion Shopping Mall. During the competition the teams from local schools had to build model bridges from thin wooden sticks that are tested at the end of the competition to determine which bridge can carry the most weight. The winners progress to the next round.
Micheal Ludick, headmaster of the Kimberley THS, said the school’s mission is to prepare learners for the real world.
“Therefore, we strive to produce the next generation of engineers and artisans. Winning the bridge building competition for the second year in a row proves that our learners are gaining these skills and will be employable one day.”
Ludick thanked Saice for creating opportunities for the learners to showcase their skill.
“We want to bring back first place from the national competition this year, and make the Northern Cape proud,” he said.
