While long-distance taxi commuters in the province can expect a 10% hike in fares from next month, short-distance taxi commuters still don’t know how much they will have to pay to travel.
Taxi fare increases will come into effect on 1 July.
Thomas Williams, the provincial secre- tary of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Northern Cape, says they are still consulting with the local taxi associations on the matter.
He says a decision had been reached that long-distance fares would increase by 10%.
“We will place notices in public pla- ces, as well as in the taxis, to bring the increase to the atten- tion of commuters,” Williams adds.
Santaco announced that all taxi fares nationally would increase between 10% and 25%.
