An organ concert will soon give residents the opportunity to see and hear what one of Kimberley’s top matriculants for 2021 most loves to do.
Waldo Jones, former learner of the Northern Cape High School, passed his 2021 National Senior Certificate examination with two distinctions.
He has already been accepted for a four-year Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Pretoria.
“In my third year I will go in the direction of Performing Arts. It has been my desire to study music since I started playing the organ,” Waldo says.
“My passion for playing the organ has become the driving force behind my music career.”
He started playing the organ by ear at age seven, and had his first official music lesson at age 11.
During his second lesson he worked out Bach’s “Toccata in D minor”.
Since then, Waldo has won numerous prizes and received many awards and bursaries for his talent.
At the age of 16 he played the organ during a youth rally in the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, which was attended by approximately 40 000 people.
Waldo is already involved in an organ-building course in Pretoria. He says if Werner Hurter, pipe organ specialist, will allow it, he would love to work with him during his March and September university holidays.
- The organ concert will take place in the Dutch Reformed Church on the corner of Long and Black Street in Kimberley on Sunday (30/01). It is set to start at 15:00. Tickets will be available at the door and cost R60 for adults and R30 for learners. The concert is presented by the Kimberley Academy of Music and the Odeion School of Music in Bloemfontein. Dr Jan Beukes, Waldo’s lecturer at Odeion, and Matthew van Wyk, his first music teacher, will join him and Luzanne Eigelaar in performing.
