Residents of Noupoort in the Northern Cape have long faced water shortages due to power outages, load shedding, and cable theft. This has disrupted the town’s ability to pump water from its main supply.
To address this issue, a sustainable water initiative is being implemented to ensure reliable water access for locals. Thus making the community more resilient against future water disruptions.
Funded by the Noupoort Wind Farm, this initiative sees the solarisation (using solar energy to power borehole pumps) and remote monitoring of three existing municipal boreholes and the main reservoir.
This is done in partnership with the Umsobomvu Municipality and Envusa Energy (an Anglo American’s jointly owned renewable energy venture with EDF Renewables). It is currently constructing the Koruson 2 renewable energy project outside Middelburg and Noupoort in the Northern Cape.

By integrating solar power and advanced data tracking technology, this project will improve water security. It wil also reduce dependence on traditional electricity sources.
Thus, ensuring a consistent water supply for the community.
Offering long-term benefits
“The pump and monitoring technology will enhance water access in Noupoort, supporting the municipality in managing resources more efficiently.
“It also offers long-term benefits, including lower carbon emissions and electricity cost savings,” stated Vanessa Fredericks, economic development manager for the Noupoort Wind Farm.
“In addition to constructing projects in the area, which are employing local labourers and utilising businesses, this project allows us to enable real long-term upliftment to the quality of life in the area,” said Hanli Smit, chief exectutive officer (CEO) of the Koruson 2 Cluster.
As part of the initiative, a hybrid solar-grid power system will be installed. This will generate approximately one million litres of water per day from the boreholes.
Real-time monitoring technology will enable remote tracking of borehole operations and reservoir levels via Air Fibre, ensuring efficient management.
Additionally, security measures, including the fencing of solar sites and ongoing operational support, will be implemented to maintain the system’s sustainability and effectiveness.
The project, set for completion by mid-June 2025, is being implemented by Impact Water Solutions, experts in sustainable water management.
Local company Mabcor Facilities Solutions has been appointed to carry out the civil works, creating employment for eight Noupoort residents.
