A truck loaded with suspected contraband cigarettes worth more than R1 m was confiscated on the N12 south of Kimberley on Sunday (02/10).
Police spokesperson, Capt. Olebogeng Tawana, said an intelligence driven operation led by members of the Kimberley K9 unit, Kimberley Flying Squad, Provincial Organised Crime and Crime Intelligence yielded this enormous results.
Tawana said the team operationalised a tip-off and acted promptly to track and stop the truck with its load, which was apparently destined for De Aar.
The truck had two occupants, aged 56 and 37.
An enquiry docket was opened whilst awaiting the tobacco brand experts to certify whether the cargo is indeed contraband cigarettes.
After pouncing on the truck, the team proceeded to Galeshewe after intelligence was gathered regarding alleged drug dealing activities on a certain premises.
Upon arrival at the premises, the 32-year-old suspect was found carrying a back-pack which contained dagga with an estimated street value of more than R37 000.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (04/10) on a charge of dealing in dagga.
The Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lt Genl. Koliswa Otola, commended the community for their concerted effort in assisting the police in the fight against criminal activities.
Otola encouraged the public to expose criminals within their communities.
