Northern Cape athlete David Janse van Vuuren of the Kimberley Harriers Running Club received his third green number, for completing 30 Comrades Marathons.
Athletics Griqualand West (AGW) congratulated Janse van Vuuren for this remarkable achievement at the 97th Comrades Marathon on 9 June, which was an up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 85,91 km.
Over the 30 races, Janse van Vuuren has earned himself three silver medals, 18 bronze medals, nine Vic Clapham medals, and has run a personal best of 7:20:09 in 1992. He ran his first Comrades in 1985.
The AGW also congratulated Arthur Nziweni of the Teemaneng Running Club in Kimberley, who earned himself a first green number for completing ten races. Nziweni boasts three silver medals and seven Bill Rowan medals over the ten races, with a personal best of 7:09:42 in 2023.
According to comrades.com, a silver medal is awarded for completing the marathon in six hours to seven hours, 30 minutes; while a bronze is awarded for ten to 11 hours.
Athlethes who complete the full distance between seven hours, 30 minutes and nine hours, receive a Bill Rowan medal; while a Vic Clapham medal is awarded to those completing the race in 11 to 12 hours.
The AGW has seen an increase in the number of Northern Cape athletes participating in and completing the Comrades. In 2023, 131 AGW athletes ran and completed the race, while in 2024 the number increased to 157.
