The Mediclinic Gariep in Kimberley will host the CANSA Shades of Pink Walk annually, starting this year.

This event on Friday, 9 August, commences and ends in the parking area at the hospital.

This initiative is hosted under the auspices of Dr. Chantele de Jager, general surgeon, who has been the driving force behind the Kimberley Pink Walk for several years.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of cancer affecting women and to bring attention to women’s health in local communities.

It aims to encourage women, in a fun and visible way, to be aware of symptoms and changes in their body, and to undergo cancer screening for early detection.

Another goal is to raise funds for CANSA.

While the event primarily focuses on women, men and children are also welcome to participate. Approximately 1 000 people are expected to take part in the 4,9 km walk or run, or 60 km cycle event.

Free services offered at the venue includes blood pressure readings, cholesterol screening tests, blood sugar screening tests, first aid, and breast examination screening tests.

Participants and spectators can look forward to a Shavathon, as well as stalls selling refreshments.

The event offers a platform for businesses to showcase their products to the general public. An additional advantage is the space it offers for marketing collateral at the start and finishing points.

Businesses are invited to make a donation towards the event in aid of breast cancer. In return a gazebo or banners, or both, can be put up, and products be displayed in the designated area in the parking lot at Mediclinic Gariep. Prizes for lucky draws are welcomed.

The entry fee to participate in the walk or run is R100 per person, and cyclists pay R150 each.

Registration takes place on Friday, from 06:00 until 07:30. All entrants will receive an ID band with a number for the lucky draws, and the first 700 entrants will receive a goody bag.

The prize-giving ceremony will take place at 10:00.
