A total of 259 rhinos have been poached for their horns in South Africa in the first six months of 2022.

Of these, two were poached in the Northern Cape and 13 in the North West.

Most of the rhinos, 133, were poached in KwaZulu-Natal.

Of the 259 killed, 210 were killed on state property and 49 in privately-owned parks.

“Recent trends in rhino poaching show a move away from the Kruger Park to private reserves and KwaZulu-Natal,” said the minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy.

From January to June, 69 people were arrested in connection with rhino poaching and rhino horn trafficking.

Members of the public can report any suspicious activities with regards to wildlife by contacting the environmental crime hotline on 080-020-5005 or dialling the SAPS number, 10111.
