These small violet blue and white flowers of the Duranta shrub are described as picotee, which refers to flowers that have one basic colour with a margin of another colour. Currently it is an ongoing challenge to keep a garden alive, and even more so flourishing, in many municipal areas all over the Northern Cape – due to constant water supply interruptions. Still, gardeners go to extremes to tend to their plants, agreeing with Minnie Aumonier who said, “When the world wearies and society fails to satisfy, there is always the garden.”
