A total of 930 markers and 200 examination assistants are converging in Kimberley until 23 December for the final hurdle of the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.
In this time-frame, which commenced on Thursday, 7 December, a total of 76 question papers and 183 642 scripts will be marked.
On Thursday the markers were officially welcomed by amongst other Hubert Mweli, director-general for Basic Education, Zolile Monakali, MEC for Education in the Northern Cape, and Gideon Oliphant, acting head of the department, at an event at the Diamantveld High School in the city.
Mweli thanked the markers for their care and professionalism, urging them to look after their own wellness in this intense time of concentration.
The marking of NSC papers needs intense and prolonged concentration, coupled with validity, reliability, consistency and accuracy, said Geoffrey van der Merwe, spokesperson for the Northern Cape Department of Education. Besides producing a mark, the outcome of the marking of each candidate must be a reflection of the extent to which the knowledge, skills and other competencies have been demonstrated.
Marking officials, as well as administrators, are expected to maintain a high level of efficiency and accuracy, Van der Merwe said.
The outcome of the NSC examinations is a barometer and is used as an indicator of the educators and schools’ performance at provincial and national levels.
Release of results
Angie Motshekga, minister of Basic Education, will announce the outcome of the examinations on 18 January, and the results will be released to candidates on 19 January.
