A planned water interruption for the entirety of Kimberley will take place from Thursday (04/05) at 20:00, until Sunday (07/05) at 18:00. Thoko Riet, media spokesperson for the Sol Plaatje Municipality, said the interruption was needed to undertake upgrades and improvements on the main supply pipelines.

A Smartball exercise needs to be performed, which involves technology used to establish leakages in a water pipeline. During the interruption, dysfunctional isolation valves will also be replaced as preparatory work at the Riverton Water Plant and the Newton Reservoir.

“This will also include a number of projects that will help improve the municipality’s water security. In the long term this exercise marks the beginning of a huge improvement in the water quality and water supply assurance to the municipality,” Riet said.

She added that roaming tankers and flatbed trucks would be made available to residents, and that more information on the matter would be communicated.

“We urge residents to make adequate provision for water to carry them through the duration of the interruption,” Riet commented.
