Kids need more calcium as they get older to support their growing bones, and milk is one of the best and most widely available sources of calcium.

Although your child might not love a glass of milk, there are other ways to provide them with calcium.

Paul Mindry, Spar brand manager, comes to the rescue by supplying easy recipes that children will love.

Milkshake Melody

Ingredients:

  • 500 ml vanilla-flavoured ice cream
  • 500 ml full-cream milk

Method:

Combine both ingredients in a food blender or processor, or use a suitable jug and a handheld stick blender. Whizz until foamy, creamy and thick.

Beat in flavouring ingredients – such as a mashed banana, 125 ml vanilla custard or 50 ml strawberry-flavoured milk powder – thoroughly.

Pour into tumblers and serve immediately.

If you want more of a fruity taste, introduce freshly chopped fruits that puree easily, such as berries, pawpaw or mango.

Homemade Custard

Ingredients:

  • 200 ml double cream
  • 700 ml full-cream milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 3 tbsp cornflour
  • 100 g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method:

Pour the cream and milk into a large pan and bring gently to just below boiling point.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk the yolks, cornflour, sugar and vanilla.

Gradually pour the hot milk mixture onto the sugar mixture, whisking constantly.

Wipe out the saucepan and pour the mixture back into it.

Heat gently, stirring with a wooden spoon until the custard thickens. Eat hot or cold.

For a healthier alternative, substitute the caster sugar for honey.
