Potholes in a road in Kimberley recently resulted in a vehicle crashing through a palisade fence, damaging the fence and a part of the garden wall.

For the past six months a resident of Carters Glen in Kimberley and her family pleaded with the Sol Plaatje Municipality to repair the severe potholes in the area, including those on the corner of Rhodes and Sinovich Avenue. They feared the potholes would eventually be the cause of an accident.

In Kimberley, a vehicle crashed through palisade fencing into a garden, after swerving out for potholes in the road.

“On 9 January, at approximately 16:25, an unfortunate incident occurred as a result of the potholes. A vehicle crashed into our property, damaging the garden wall and fence after swerving out for potholes,” says Tasmin Coetzee.

“The potential for severe injury or fatality was evident, and it is only by sheer luck that the situation did not escalate further. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the pervasive pothole problem in our area,” she remarks, saying it is disheartening that despite numerous complaints from residents and the clear dangers associated with potholes, no significant action has been taken.

“The safety of our community should be top-priority.”

A part of the palisade had to be removed and replaced after the accident.

‘Repairing of potholes gone off very well’

Thabo Mothibi, spokesperson for the municipality, says the repairing of potholes has gone off very well in the new year, and at a large scale.

Repair work is currently being undertaken in Bodley Street and Hodgson Road. Mothibi says some streets in West End, and Morgan Road in Galeshewe are also receiving attention, as well as key intersections in suburbia.

“Repairing of potholes is a moving target, especially amid long spells of heavy rainfall,” he says, advising residents to lodge queries with or report potholes to the municipality’s call centre on 053-830-6111.
