Immediate solutions are being implemented to strengthen the delivery of health services in the Northern Cape.

This is according to the province’s Department of Health (DOH) in a press release, stating that several facilities in the Frances Baard district have been identified to provide a starting point for this process.

The department stated that this approach cut across all five districts, on which MEC Maruping Lekwene would elaborate during his budget speech on Wednesday (15/06).

The facilities identified in the district include the Connie Vorster District Hospital in Hartswater, Pampierstad Community Health Centre (CHC), Jan Kempdorp CHC, Warrenton CHC, Sakhile Clinic, Galeshewe Day Hospital, Valspan Clinic and the Prof. Z.K. Matthews District Hospital.

The implementation plan includes the immediate appointment of 16 sessional nurses, as well as fast-tracking the permanent appointments of 30 nurses and four medical officers.

In the press release, media liaison officer Lebogang Majaha stated that several appointments had recently been finalised for the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley. This includes filling vacancies with 5 pharmacists, 6 radiographers, 7 medical officers, 3 medical and orthotic officers, 3 specialists and 2 managers for therapeutic services and quality assurance.

Also, a provincial advertisement is expected to soon be placed for the recruitment of 249 permanent support staff, ranging from housekeeper and laundry supervisors to cleaners, porters, general assistants, drivers, registry clerks, food services aides, administration clerks, mortuary assistants, artisans, human resource and supply chain management staff.

Regarding the procurement of essential services to improve service delivery and efficiencies in all the province’s health facilities, all the district managers are empowered with financial delegations to ensure efficacy within their entire district health system, the DOH stated.

In terms of pharmaceuticals, the department has enough stock at its medical depot and makes use of the Stock Visibility System to monitor and provide immediate support to facilities requiring additional supplies.

To modernise health care services, the DOH is working on the migration of the telephone systems at call centres.

In case of an emergency, the public is encouraged to still make use of the 112 and 10117 emergency number.

In addition, 087-759-2154 can be dialled by Frances Baard, John Taolo Gaetsewe and Pixley ka Seme residents, and 087-759-2153 by those who reside in the Pixley ka Seme and ZF Mgcawu district.
