A man from Kakamas started his nine-year prison sentence after being found guilty of bludgeoning his friend to death with a pickaxe handle.
William Nago (49) was convicted on 8 July in the Kakamas Regional Court for the murder of Deon Rooi (34) in 2016.
A quarrel between the two men took an ugly turn on 5 August 2016 in Alheit near Kakamas.
Eventually, the argument became so heated that it turned into a physical fight.
According to reports Nago grabbed a pickaxe handle and repeatedly struck Rooi with it.
Rooi was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a day later.
The acting district commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, Brig. Besnaar, congratulated Sgt Jaco Basson of the Kakamas Detective Unit for his hard work in bringing the culprit to book.
