A man from Kakamas started his nine-year prison sentence after being found guilty of bludgeoning his friend to death with a pickaxe handle.

Sgt Jaco Basson was the investigating officer in the murder case.

William Nago (49) was convicted on 8 July in the Kakamas Regional Court for the murder of Deon Rooi (34) in 2016.

A quarrel between the two men took an ugly turn on 5 August 2016 in Alheit near Kakamas.

Eventually, the argument became so heated that it turned into a physical fight.

According to reports Nago grabbed a pickaxe handle and repeatedly struck Rooi with it.

Rooi was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a day later.

The acting district commis­sioner of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, Brig. Besnaar, congratulated Sgt Jaco Basson of the Kakamas Detec­tive Unit for his hard work in bringing the culprit to book.
