The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) recently donated school uniforms, laptops and desktop computers to the N.J. Heyns Special School in Kimberley, which focuses on teaching technical skills to learners who may otherwise not do well in mainstream schools. Headmaster Dirk Neels, who was recently appointed, said with the computers the learners had a better chance of helping themselves by doing research. This was made possible by Thandiwe Mfolo, a community activist, who referred Sanral to the school. The school uniforms, which many cannot afford, were also appreciated. Luphelo Ngalo, Sanral Western Region stakeholder relations coordinator, said the donation consisted of 10 used laptops, 10 data projectors, 17 used desktops and the uniforms. Ngalo said education is also about practical skills that one gains, with which one can get a job. “I was impressed by the school’s workshop and the skills they have to turn plastic waste into pavement bricks.” At the handing over are from the left Ngalo, Sandra Keith (deputy head – Technical), Zingisa Tshali (marketing and communications) and André de Clerk (deputy head – Academic).
