The Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) rugby team had a flying start in their first-ever participation of the FNB Varsity Shield by securing a 41 – 37 victory over the team of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
In this opening match of the 2025 FNB Varsity Shield on Friday, 14 February, on the SPU’s homefield at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley, both teams battled fiercely, with momentum swinging back and forth throughout the contest.
As stated in a FNB Varsity Shield press release, the UKZN struck first to put them in a 3 – 0 lead, but the SPU’s Khanya Kama quickly responded by levelling the score at 3 – 3.
The SPU turned up the heat as Jan Potgieter and Leslie Ruiters dotted down, with Kama converting once and adding a penalty to give the SPU a narrow 22 – 20 lead at halftime.
The second half saw a brilliant solo effort from the SPU’s Liyabona Maplanga, levelling the score at 27 – 27. Jaiden Faviers then powered over, with Kama adding the extras.
The UKZN kept fighting, turning the score to 37 – 34, but Kama’s conversion secured the 41 – 37 win.
