The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works has repaired the damaged section of the R31 provincial road between Middelpos and Daniëlskuil.
This is according to Crystal Robertson, spokesperson for the department, in a press release issued on Monday (11/04) evening.
“We had planned to open the road the previous weekend. However, the incessant rain did not permit us. Tonight a team of workers will be focusing on the final preparations,” the statement read.
Robertson said the road was expected to be opened on Tuesday (12/04) at 06:00, after which a stop and go traffic control system would be in place.
“Motorists should allow extra traveling time,” she suggested.
Robertson stated that the blasting of rocks in the road reserve, which is supposed to release water from the pan to the nearest stream, would happen once the blasting application was approved.
The department will submit an application to Telkom, as the rock blasting area is in close proximity to telephone lines. The blasting area is not on the critical path in terms of the use of the road, she said.
Workers will still be seen on-site, as a team will continue to pump water to the nearest stream until such time that the application to blast is approved.
The department thanked road users for their cooperation, and asked them to obey safety and traffic officers on-site.
