United Manganese of Kalahari (UMK) has broken the world record with the highest number of detonators fired in a single shot by blasting 3 618 units.
The record blast that consisted of 1 469 units of detonators was completed by explosives company Enaex at the Russik mine near Hotazel on July 8 through using the DaveyTronic digital blasting system. Preparation for blasting the block that consisted primarily of calcrete, started on 22 June.
The charging of blast holes was completed on July 6 and the detonator programming was carried out on 6 and 7 July.
UMK says this achievement, in many ways, underscores the importance of collaboration.
