Two new houses for two families residing in Olifantshoek have been built by Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine.
The two old homes were in a decrepit state, and after being brought to the mine’s attention by the local ward councillor, planning and consultation engagements between Sishen Mine representatives and the Gamagara Municipality took place.
After assessments of the properties, a decision was made to completely demolish the existing structures and replace it with brand new houses. The scope of work undertaken included the construction of new foundations, building of structural walls, the installation of plumbing fixtures, and assembly of a corrugated iron roof.
The two-bedroom, one-bathroom homes with an open-plan lounge and kitchen area, were built for Pulilalo Lena Steward (79) and Gosalamang Ida Mdiniza (84), who both reside in the same street in Ditloung in Olifantshoek.
“I am truly grateful for what the mine has done for me and my family. This house has changed our lives for the better. It was raining just the other day, and we didn’t have to make plans to stop any leaks!
“For the first time in a long while, I enjoyed the rain and slept peacefully. Sitting by the front door of the new house and enjoying the breeze has become one of my favourite pastimes.
“I would like to thank the mine and all those involved in building this home for us,” said Mdiniza.
At the handover ceremony of the two houses, general manager at Sishen Mine, André Roux, said the mine worked closely with the local municipality on this project.
