A ten-year prison term has been handed down to a young man from Mothibistad after he was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl he met at a tuck shop.
Brig. Mohale Ramatseba, police spokesperson, said Lesego Pelosera (20) was sentenced by the Mothibistad Regional Court a year after the incident happened.
In May 2019, the girl was sent to a tuck shop at about 20:00.
Pelosera met with the child and forced her to his place, where she was raped.
She reported the matter to her father. Her father then notified the police and Pelosera was arrested a short while later.
Sgt Reginald Kwenamore, the investigating officer, successfully opposed bail and Pelosera remained in custody until his sentencing, said Ramatseba.
Capt. Caren Nel, Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) commander, and Brig. Nicky Mills, provincial FCS commander, commended Kwenamore for his meticulous investigation.
Maj. Gen. Johan Bean, John Taolo Gaetsewe district commissioner, commended the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for working closely with the SAPS to ensure that justice is served.
Bean urged parents to look after their children and not to send them to tuck shops, especially during the night.
