A suspended sergeant of the South African Police Service, Wayne Mbayeka (45), was sentenced to life imprisonment on two counts of rape by the Kimberley Regional Court on 22 February.
According to Mojalefa Senokoatsane, regional communications manager of the National Prosecuting Authority, the victim (43) approached Mbayeka, who was off-duty, and asked him for a lift. She knew him to be a respected member of the police service.
He was remanded in custody until the conclusion of his trial, and was suspended without pay.
