Through a series of friendly competitions, the Northern Cape mining community showcased expertise and industry best practices relating to safety.

This one-day event hosted in October by the Northern Cape Mine Managers Association (NCMMA) is an annual safety, health, and environment event.

It encourages mutual learning and collaboration amongst association members in fields relating firefighting, first aid, environmental care, safety regulations and overall emergency preparedness.

Participating teams who excelled in their respective competition categories were officially recognised during a prize-giving ceremony and offered the opportunity to celebrate with their industry colleagues.

Organised by the 2025 association chair − Kumba Iron Ore Sishen Mine − the event saw representatives from 24 regional mines participating. In attendance were the principal inspector of mines for the Northern Cape, alongside stakeholders of the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

“The NCMMA is an important collaboration platform that perpetuates unity amongst mining companies in the region,” says Ntokozo Khanyile, contractor management manager at Kumba Iron Ore.

This event demonstrate the level of commitment mining companies have towards safety, Khanyile added.
