The biannual Northern Cape Artist Exhibition, which can currently be viewed at the William Humphreys Art Gallery (Whag) in Kimberley, features a compelling mix of drawings, paintings, collages, photographs and illustrations by a diverse range of artists from the Northern Cape.
This year’s instalment was shaped by an enthusiastic response to an open call earlier this year that invited submissions from artists living and working in the province.
The adjudication panel, led by Whag’s curatorial team, undertook a rigorous selection process, ensuring that the final exhibition represents multiple artistic voices and practices, reflecting the Northern Cape’s creative community.

The call drew significant interest from younger artists, many of whom are showcasing their work in a national museum for the first time. This aligns with Whag’s ongoing mission to promote inclusivity through diversity, nurturing emerging talent while engaging intergenerational dialogue within the visual arts.
Timed with its opening to coincide with the country’s Youth Month commemorations, the exhibition pays tribute to the spirit of 16 June, foregrounding the voices and visions of young people through the arts.
The platform provided reaffirms Whag’s commitment to creating space for expression, experimentation, and visibility.
“This exhibition is a vital expression of the Northern Cape’s creative pulse,” said the curatorial team.
“It gives voice not only to the region’s seasoned artists, but also to a bold new generation, many of whom are sharing their work with the public for the very first time.”
- The exhibition can be visited until 31 August. Find the gallery at 1 Cullinan Crescent. Admission is free.
