A newly upgraded football field was officially handed over to the Gamagara Municipality by Kumba Iron Ore. At a total investment of R7,7 million, the 100m x 58m grass pitch facility began a phased construction process in 2021, sporting two pavilions, ablution facilities and a water irrigation system.

Located in Siyathemba, the ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by a host of stakeholders, including representatives of the municipality, community leaders and local football teams which graced the pitch with a friendly football match.

At the event Johan Roman, mayor and ward councillor urged the community to make use and take care of the sports ground.

“We are proud that a local contractor was appointed to carry out the work on this facility. This football field belongs to the Gamagara community and people should feel free to come and host events here. We really appreciate the contribution made by Kumba to make this possible”.

Representing Kumba at the event Mhlanganisi Madlongolwana, stakeholder engagement principal, said the project has been a long time coming, with the initial work and planning starting as early as 2017.

“This is a testament of the ability of people being able to get things done, but most importantly, being able to getting things done together.”
