An 18-year-old house robbery suspect who severely assaulted a 66-year-old woman from a farm in the Marydale area was arrested, and is charged with house robbery and attempted murder.
Lt Col. Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, said the arrest followed an organised search for the suspect after an incident on a farm on Saturday, 14 October.
Kock said at about 17:30 on Saturday, the suspect apparently entered the farmhouse near Marydale under the pretence of asking water from the female farm owner.
He then allegedly overpowered the victim and severely assaulted her, also stabbing her in the face and head, and afterwards fled with two cell phones, vehicle keys, binoculars, alcohol, and a cooler box.
The police responded and the victim was transported for medical treatment at a local hospital.
All the necessary resources and neighbouring stations were then activated, and the team traced and arrested the suspect on Monday at 06:00 on a farm near Vanwyksvlei and recovered the stolen property.
The team consisted of members of amongst other the police in Marydale, reservists, Prieska Crime Prevention unit, the K9 unit from Upington, and local farmers who assisted in the search and apprehension of the suspect.
The Pixley Ka Seme district commissioner, Maj Gen. Nomana Mtukushe, commended the police members and the farming communities for their swift response.
The suspect will soon appear in court on charges of house robbery and attempted murder.
