A man was jailed for 18 years by the Upington Regional Court for raping his 11-year-old sister in their parental home.
The 25-year-old man’s name will also be entered into the National Sexual Offences Register, the court ruled last Tuesday, 4 August.
Lt. Col Dimakatso Mooi, police spokesperson, says the accused raped his sister at their home on 29 November 2017 and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
A year later, however, the young girl was brave enough to tell her mother what happened.
On 18 August 2018 the matter was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested on the same day.
During his bail application Sgt Lucky Malepe successfully opposed the accused’s release and he remained in custody for the duration of the trial.
He was convicted and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The provincial head of the unit for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences, Brig. Nicky Mills, applauded the investigating officer for a meticulous investigation that ensured that justice prevailed.
The girl will now be safe with the perpetrator out of her life.
