Locks shaved, sprayed in support of cancer patients

Supporters can again shave or spray their hair in solidarity with those facing a cancer diagnosis.

Supporters can again shave or spray their hair in solidarity with those facing a cancer diagnosis.

The annual CANSA Shavathon fundraising event takes place at shopping centres across the country on Saturday (26/02). Certain venues will also host a Shavathon on Sunday (27/02).

“We are excited to launch our Be Uniquely You – Be Colourful campaign,” says Maria Scholtz, CANSA head of sustainability.

“Shaving your hair – or spraying it in a multitude of colours – costs R50 per adult and R25 for children younger than 12. Many South Africans take part on behalf of a loved one who is living with cancer or has been lost to cancer.”

Stencils are available to those who wish to add extra flair when spraying their hair. The spray, made of vegetable dye, is safe to use and comes out after one wash.

Those who shave their hair can donate their locks to make wigs for cancer survivors. A limited-edition badge of honour will be given to those who make hair donations of 25 cm or longer.

CANSA headwear will be sold for R50 per item. Proceeds will go directly towards providing CANSA’s care and support services to cancer patients and their loved ones.

Host an event

Those wishing to host their own Shavathon to raise funds for CANSA can schedule their event from Monday (28/02) to 4 March.

Interested parties can register and order Shavathon products through the CANSA Online Shop.

Raise funds online

Participants are invited to open an online fundraising page before participating in a Shavathon event. This will give people the opportunity to show extra support to cancer survivors by making an online donation before shaving or spraying their hair.

“Be sure to share your online fundraising efforts on your social media platforms, using the hashtag #CANSAShavathon, in the weeks leading up to your participation,” Scholtz says.
