On Saturday morning (17/09), a long queue of hopeful 18 to 29-year-old youths waited next to the Diamond Pavilion Shopping Mall in KImberley, aiming to get hold of a recruitment form to join the South African Police Service (SAPS) as an entry-level police trainee. A representative of the mall said the decision to use the mall as a distribution point for the recruitment forms had been informed by its central location, and noted that the scale of this turn-out was unexpected. This recruitment drive by the SAPS was one of several that took place in all five districts of the Northern Cape. One of the youths in the queue said he was interested in helping to fight crime in the country, while another said that since leaving school, it was very difficult to find employment. Applicants must submit the completed form and other documentation by Tuesday (27/09).
