Learners in the Northern Cape have even more opportunity to take part in chess, which is described as a mental sport.
This sport, an affiliate of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, requires mental exertion and strategic thinking, to name but a few skills to be a successful player.
The Hopetown Open Chess Tournament for learners takes place on Saturday, 10 February, at the Hopetown High School.
This event, presented by the Hopetown Chess Club, commences at 07:15 with registration and draws, after which round one will start at 08:00.
Learners can take part in the U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, or U18 sections.
Players born before 1 January 2007 can take part in the open section.
The entry fee is R120 per player, which includes a light lunch.
A prize-giving ceremony will take place after the last round.
The closing date for entries is Thursday, 8 February, at 21:00.
Furthermore, all learners are invited by the Frances Baard Schools Chess Club to take part in its open chess tournament on Saturday, 17 February, at the Kimberley Technical High School (THS).
Learners must wear a school uniform or school gym for the event and can take part in the U9, U11, U13, U15, U17 or U19 divisions.
