The Sishen Golf Club hosted the IdrivechipandputtSA golf development programme on Sunday (15/09).

This is a junior development programme aimed at growing the game of golf by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in the sport: driving, chipping and putting.

By tapping the creative and competitive spirit of girls and boys aged six to 14, the programme provides aspiring junior golfers an opportunity to play with their peers from different backgrounds and schools around Kathu.

The Makaleng Golf Association invited children of Curro Kathu, the Sishen Primary School, the Kathu Primary School and the Sishen Intermediate School to take part in the event, where more than 120 children played golf for the first time.

Richard Okhaa of Sishen Intermediate offered his rental bus for the transport of Sishen children to attend the event.

“It is wrong for kids growing up in Kathu, next to one of the best golf courses in the country, not to have a chance to play golf, this initiative provides the opportunity for kids to at least have a chance to play. That is why I support IdrivechipandputtSA,” said Okhaa.

The children were excited to participate and play.

Kgalalelo Pico said that she felt like crying to have had an opportunity to play golf for the first time.

The association also invited mothers and aunts to participate.

“We feel that women and children have been marginalised in the pas,t hence we decided to include mothers and aunts,” said Mosiemane Kgatlhane, committee member of Makaleng.
