The Universal Rugby Football Club (RFC) in Kimberley, one of the oldest rugby clubs in the country, is prepared for this year’s regional league under the Griqualand West Rugby Union – with its first game being played on Saturday, 2 March, against the Kimberley Rugby Club.
The management of Universal RFC is confident that the team can win this year’s regional league, since it finished third on the log in the 2023 season.
In preparation for the league, team members each received a sponsored kit from the Kimberley-based C-PaC Pumps and Valves, and the club has already secured the rugby field at the Diskobolos Army Base to host home matches.
Since its establishment in 1886, Universal RFC has been showing growth, promoting the game in communities, and also keeping young boys away from illegal activities and building a bond of teamwork and camaraderie.
The club also shows diversity by having players of different backgrounds, race, and religion, and has succeeded in assembling its first women’s rugby team this year.
Furthermore, the previous chairperson of Universal RFC, Romeo Syfers, has been elected as the new chairperson of the Griquas Region.
Support from the community and businesses, however, is always needed; whether in the form of transport, clothing for teams, rugby training equipment, and day to day finance for medical personnel and referees on match days.
