Bystanders in Kimberley who recently filmed a man allegedly washing himself in the dining and kitchen area of a fast-food restaurant in Compound Street in the city, threatened to post the video on Facebook.

The video was circulated on WhatsApp.

In the video the bystanders ask the man in the restaurant if it is hygienic to wash himself in the restaurant. He then throws water at them.

“You wash in the restaurant, no man. It is a restaurant,” the bystanders say. “Julle moet sien, we see, we got you,” they tell the man.

The bare-chested man who seems to be washing behind a counter, shouts at them. He has a towel wrapped around his waste, then throws water at the bystanders.

The restaurant advertises its “strictly halaal curry and rice, bunny chows, roti and pap-and-vleis” fast food dishes.

Thabo Mothibi, Sol Plaatje Municipal spokesperson, says the restaurant in question was inspected twice and recommendations issued to ensure its operations are within the parameters of the regulations. A follow-up meeting will follow.

Mothibi says their health inspectors conduct regular inspections to ensure formal and informal businesses comply with requirements set out in the Regulations 638 under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, Act 54 of 1974.

“It means we are empowered to inspect businesses’ general hygiene in terms of the requirements for food premises, and the transportation of food and related items. We do regular inspections and when we receive complaints. “

Mothibi says in extreme cases, they will enforce the closure of an outlet that does not operate with a license or permit, or sells goods that are not permitted.

“We’ve had cases of tuckshops selling liquor, businesses or premises being overpopulated, and employees that were not documented. Sometimes our operations are prohibited by members of the public, as was the case in Ritchie recently.

“The Sol Plaatje Municipality is involved in a multidisciplinary operation with the police, Home Affairs, and other government agencies, targeting businesses. Over 50 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested in the past weeks, including two business owners.”
