An event of movement, motivation, and momentum awaits women on Saturday, 26 July, when the Kimberley Harriers Running Club presents a 10km race in which only women can take part.

Those who are not ready to complete a 10km race, can enter for the 4,5km distance, both commencing and ending at the rugbyfield of the Diamantveld High School.

“We wanted to present the 10km race, a first for our area, during August which is Women’s Month. Unfortunately, the calender was already full and therefor we are presenting it as close to August as possible,” says Ria Janse van Vuuren, secretary of the club. She says it is all about the awareness that general and mental health benefit from walking or running.

Never too late to start exercising

Both running and walking offer significant health benefits. It builds muscle, burns calories, controls blood sugar levels, improves cardiovascular fitness, and reduces stress and anxiety, according to mayoclinic.org. Whether you should take up walking or running, depends on your fitness goals, health conditions, and lifestyle.

Health benefits of walking or running, as on healthhub.intercare.co.za, are:

  • When you walk or run, endorphins and serotonin (chemicals that may enhance mood) are released in your body.
  • Regular walking or running can improve mental health, memory, and learning.
  • Running even just five to ten minutes daily at an average speed helps reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other common diseases.
  • Also, walking or running leads to better cardio health; better sleep; improved knee and back health; improved memory; fewer colds; better mood and energy; lower risk of developing cancer (running or walking helps you maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese is linked to 13 different types of cancer); and
  • lower risk of developing neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
