Expired and potentially hazardous food with an estimated value of more than R200 000 was confiscated in Daniëlskuil on Monday, 20 November.
This formed part of a multi-disciplinary inspection to enforce food security after societal outrage and concerns.
Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson of the ZF Mgcawu District, said officials under the command of the station commander of the Daniëlskuil police station, Capt. Salvin van Wyk, visited nine stores where all expired food and hazardous food items were removed.
Other recent successes by units of the South African Police Service include:
- the seizing of various brands of illicit cigarettes and wooka tobacco valued at approximately R7,8 million and the issuing of fines to the value of R1 500 for dealing in illicit medicine in Kimberley, Kuruman and Prieska on 13 November;
- the confiscation of a significant number of illicit cigarettes and tobacco products in Hartswater, valued at R10 million. Sgt Merapelo Pilane, police spokesperson, said custom officials are investigating the origin of the counterfeit tobacco products;
- the confiscation of suspected stolen copper cables of essential infrastructures at a scrap metal premises in Paballelo, Upington, on 16 November. A 53-year-old male was arrested for purchasing the suspected stolen property;
- also last week, police arrested 46 illegal miners in Kleinzee on the Northern Cape coastline for trespassing, being undocumented immigrants and being in the possession of suspected uncut diamonds. The police crime prevention stop and search actions also resulted in the confiscation of numerous illegal mining implements such as spades, pick axes, bags containing suspected diamond bearing gravel, suspected uncut diamonds, hammers and sieves.
