With two wins, 13 points, and currently fifth on the log standing, the rugby team of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is heading to round seven of the FNB Varsity Shield, after which the semifinal rounds will commence.
Although the Gemmies from Kimberley showed spirit and perseverance against the FNB Madibaz of the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha on 21 March, the Madibaz beat them with 38 – 28.

In the first 20 minutes of the match, the SPU burst out the gates with tries by Leslie Ruiters and Cassie Botes.In the second stanza, the SPU fullback Bokamoso Maphisa stepped and weaved his way across the whitewash.
In the last minutes, SPU front-rower Aviwe Mpepo put them back in touching distance, but as thick gloom descended on the stadium, Madibaz flanker Johan van Zyl put the result beyond doubt when he got on the right end of another maul to score.
- For round seven, the Gemmies met the University of the Western Cape (UWC) at 17:00 on Friday, 28 March, at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley.
Griquas grab Bulldogs by the collar
In round three of the SA Cup series, the Griquas beat the Border Bulldogs with 118 – 3. The Griquas, last year’s winners, are number one on the log with 15 points, followed by the Pumas and Griffons, also with 15 points each.
- On Saturday, 29 March, at 15:00 the team of the Northern Cape meet the Griffons in Welkom for round four.
