A 15-year-old learner of the Hopetown High School emerged as a national champion at Athletics South Africa’s (ASA) U16, U18 and U20 Track and Field Championships held in Potchefstroom.
Robin-Lee Eland won a gold medal for finishing the U16 200 m event in 22.04.
He also took home the silver medal in the U16 100 m event.
Athletics Griqualand West (AGW) produced 17 athletes who had qualified and then participated in this national event, which was held from 31 March to 2 April. Of these 17 athletes, a significant number made it to the top ten in the country.
The AGW and its newly elected board have expressed extreme pride and thanks Robin-Lee’s coach, Maryna van der Walt, who has tirelessly trained him to become the South African champion he is today.
The federation believes this is the beginning of greater things to come for athletics in the Northern Cape.
