Two people have been arrested outside Upington with drugs worth more than R2 million in their possession.
These arrests on Sunday, 26 May, followed information being received of an alleged consignment of drugs en route to Upington.
Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson in the ZF Mgcawu (ZFM) district, said after the information had been operationalised, a Hyundai Sonata was stopped on the N10 road outside Upington.
The vehicle was searched and 9 315 Mandrax tablets with an estimated value of R930 150, 2,012 kg of tik with an estimated value of R603 000, and 1,32 kg of crack cocaine with an estimated value of R554 000 were found stashed in the vehicle.
The members of the task team confiscated the drugs, the vehicle, and an undisclosed amount of cash, as well as cellphones.
The man and woman in the vehicle – two Nigerian nationals aged 42 and 39 years old – were arrested for dealing in drugs and are expected to appear in court soon.
Members of the ZFM Highway Patrol who were off-duty, as well as members of the Upington Border Police and Upington K9 unit were involved in this interception.
