The remodeled Wall Of Remembrance was unveiled at the Kuruman Correctional Centre last week.

On Wednesday, 23 October, family members of the late officials of the Department of Correctional Services traveled from as far as Upington, Daniëlskuil, and Taung to attend the special ceremony.

The initial wall was unveiled on 3 October 2018, but the committee of the recreational club decided to give it a face-lift.

Senior correctional official (SCO) Leon Matthews Duiker (left), unveiled the Wall of Remembrance and delivered a speech.

“It was a very emotional but blessed moment to share with the families of our late colleagues and we really appreciate the fact that we could share this special day with them,” says Leon Matthews Duiker, senior correctional official (SCO), who unveiled the wall.

The members whose names are listed on the wall passed away while still working for the department.

On the day, the family members were also awarded with certificates of appreciation as a small gesture from the centre.

Several events usually take place at the wall, such as candle lighting, placement of flowers, and words of encouragement spoken by a spiritual worker.

The families, spiritual workers, officials, as well as Kuruman Tombstones, were thanked for their unique contribution towards a successful unveiling.
